When the Storm Becomes a Gift
Storms have a way of interrupting our plans.

They can wake us up, shake us up, knock out the power, uproot homes, derail plans, cause unexpected damage, and force us to put life on hold. Most of us spend our time praying for them to pass as quickly as possible.
But every once in a while, a storm becomes a gift.
Fifteen years ago, one of my closest friends experienced the unimaginable. She lost her little boy.
The night before he passed away, a storm rolled through. The power went out, and like so many parents have done before, she got up in the middle of the night to comfort him. She held him, loved on him, and spent extra time with him that she never would have had if the weather hadn’t disrupted the household.
After he passed, she shared something that has stayed with me ever since. She told me she was thankful for the storm.
Think about that for a moment.
The very thing that had been an inconvenience became one of her greatest blessings. Had the night been quiet and uneventful, she likely would have slept peacefully until morning. Instead, the storm interrupted her sleep and gave her one more opportunity to hold the little boy she would say goodbye to the very next day.
I don’t believe God wastes our pain, even when we can’t understand it. I don’t believe we have to call something good in order to trust God in the middle of it. Faith means believing that God is still present when life makes absolutely no sense.
I have thought about her countless times over the years, especially as a mom.
When I was exhausted from getting up every two hours with a newborn, I would remember her. When overactive toddlers felt overwhelming and I longed for one uninterrupted moment of quiet, I would remember her. Even now, when parenting a teenager can feel emotionally draining, I think about the mothers who would give anything to have one more disagreement, one more late-night conversation, or one more opportunity to remind their child to do the normal daily things we tend to roll our eyes about as we repeat the same request for the ninth time.
That perspective has changed the way I look at the everyday frustrations of life.
How many of us spend our lives trying to avoid every inconvenience, every delay, and every interruption, never realizing those very moments might become God-gifted memories we treasure most?
-
Maybe the move you didn’t want to make introduced you to people who changed your life.
-
Maybe the canceled plans gave you an unexpected evening with someone you’ll one day desperately miss.
-
Maybe the job loss forced you into a career you never would have pursued otherwise.
-
Maybe the illness slowed life down enough for you to reconnect with your family.
-
Maybe the friendship that ended created space for healing and healthier relationships.
We don’t usually recognize the blessing while we’re standing in the middle of the storm. We see the inconvenience. We feel the frustration. We wish it away.
And we have to learn to trust God through it before we can see what He may be doing in it.
Only later do we recognize that what felt like an interruption was an invitation.
An invitation to be present.
To slow down.
To notice what really matters.
To hold someone a little longer.
To say the words we assume we’ll have another chance to say tomorrow.
None of us knows how many tomorrows we’re promised. Scripture reminds us that our lives are but a breath. That truth isn’t meant to frighten us. It is meant to remind us to pay attention to the life and the people God has placed in front of us today.
That’s what makes this story so powerful to me.
A little boy who left this world far too soon is still changing lives fifteen years later. His mama’s ability to find a bright light in one of the darkest moments of her life reminds people, including myself, to see interruptions differently, to hold our children a little tighter, to complain a little less, and to recognize that the moments we often rush through are the very moments we’ll one day wish we could relive.
So the next time life interrupts your plans, before you rush to complain, pause for just a second. This inconvenience could be creating a memory. This delay could be making room for something you’ll one day be grateful happened exactly the way it did. This storm could be giving you something you’ll never get back if you wish it away.
And when you can’t see the purpose yet, trust God anyway. You don’t have to understand the storm to trust the One who is with you in it.
Bryce’s life was far too short, but the impact of his life continues. It is my hope that his story keeps reaching people and changing perspectives, reminding us all to look for the blessings that can be found even in life’s hardest storms and to trust that even there, God is still present.
