Unlocking True Abundance: Why God’s Plan Requires Our Diligence

If you have tuned into Abundant TV recently, or if we’ve ever crossed paths in the Christian media world, you know I talk a lot about the “abundant life.” It is literally the namesake and the heartbeat of our network. But over my years of building Coastal Media and having deep conversations with believers from all walks of life, I’ve realized something crucial: we often misunderstand what the abundant life actually is.
We love the promise Jesus makes in John 10:10—that He came so we may have life “and have it abundantly.” However, we frequently fall into the trap of thinking abundance is just supposed to fall into our laps. We sit back, pray for a breakthrough, and then wait.
But when you dig into scripture, God lays out a very clear, practical outline for what it means to live abundantly. And spoiler alert: it requires us to roll up our sleeves.
Here is what the Bible actually says about diligence, laziness, and unlocking the life God has prepared for you.
Diligence vs. Laziness: The Biblical Blueprint
Throughout the wisdom of the scriptures, there is a recurring theme that directly connects hard work to God’s provision, while fiercely warning against procrastination and laziness.
“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” — Proverbs 10:4
This isn’t just about financial wealth; it’s about a wealth of spirit, relationships, and purpose. When we are diligent with the gifts, talents, and time God has entrusted to us, He multiplies them.
I can tell you firsthand, launching a TV network and running a media company has never been a walk in the park. There were late nights, early mornings, and moments where Kristen and I had to just put our heads down and do the hard work. God provided the vision, but He absolutely expected us to provide the diligence.
The Power of an Intentional Plan
Proverbs takes this concept a step further by reminding us that hard work must be paired with direction:
“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” — Proverbs 21:5
Notice the word plans. Diligence isn’t just running on a treadmill and exhausting yourself while getting nowhere; it’s intentional, focused work. It means:
-
Creating a roadmap for your family, your ministry, or your business.
-
Having the daily discipline to walk out that roadmap.
-
Avoiding shortcuts and “get-rich-quick” mentalities.
Haste and shortcuts—or worse, avoiding the work altogether—ultimately lead to empty hands.
Work is a Calling, Not a Curse
The Apostle Paul understood this reality deeply. In the early church, some believers thought that because Jesus was returning, or because God’s grace was free, they didn’t need to work anymore. Paul gave them a strict, almost shocking rule:
“The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
Why was Paul so blunt? Because he knew that laziness robs us of our God-given dignity. Work isn’t a punishment; it’s a calling. God designed us to be creators, builders, and contributors to His Kingdom. When we avoid work, we aren’t just risking poverty—we are actively stepping out of the abundant life God designed for us. He wants to bless the work of our hands, but we have to give Him something to bless!
Your Challenge for This Week
As you go about your week, I want to leave you with a few questions to reflect on:
-
Where have you been procrastinating?
-
What is that one thing God has asked you to build, fix, or start, that you’ve been putting off?
Maybe it’s taking that scary first step toward a new career. Maybe it’s putting in the hard, emotional work to repair a fractured relationship. Whatever it is, take that step today. Apply diligence. Make a plan.
You will be amazed at how God meets you in your effort and opens the doors to true abundance.
Keep striving, keep building, and keep living abundantly!
