LOS ANGELES — More than half a million Americans are homeless on any given night. “Homelessness: The Reality and the Solution” features interviews with community organizations who are actively helping fight against the humanitarian crisis. Billions of dollars in government spending have not solved the problem of the mounting homelessness crisis across the country.
“The homelessness crisis in America is getting worse by the day. Politicians promise to stop it but their policies often make the situation worse,” said Marissa Streit, CEO of PragerU. “Our short documentary reveals the root causes of homelessness and offers compassionate, effective solutions that we can all get behind.”
With Short Documentaries on topics ranging from climate change, America’s education system and Big Tech censorship, PragerU has become a major player, taking on video-driven leftist outlets like VICE and VOX.
PragerU’s new short documentary about homelessness was created in partnership with the Cicero Institute.
“The Housing First model is based on a very simple and almost intuitive idea that if you’re homeless, the problem is that you need a house,” said Judge Glock, Senior Director of Policy and Research at the Cicero Institute. “If you look at the numbers of what’s actually causing people to be homeless, it’s overwhelmingly problems with mental health and drug addiction.”
Gregg Johnson, Founder of Positive Directions Equals Change, said, “If you’re going to put somebody in housing and not provide any type of service—no treatment services, no case management—just stick them in the house, so you don’t have to look at them? How does that really help?”
A recent study concluded that over 75% of unsheltered have a drug or alcohol addiction and a similar number also have a severe mental health disorder. The consensus of experts and practitioners is that the issue cannot be solved simply by providing housing.
“If all we’re going to do is help them aspire to be like that for the rest of their lives by sticking them in a house and not addressing the issues, it’s horrible,” said Michele Steeb, senior fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
With this new short documentary, PragerU is educating millions of people about the truth of homelessness.
