As Cable Continues to Shrink, More Families Are Choosing Streaming

Comcast, the nation’s largest cable provider, reported another quarter of significant losses in its traditional video business on Thursday. According to the company’s latest earnings report, they lost 280,000 domestic cable TV subscribers in the second quarter of 2026. While that’s a slight improvement from the 325,000 lost during the same period last year, it sends a clear and continuing signal: the long-term exodus from traditional pay television is here to stay.
The results, recently published by The Wall Street Journal, also showed Comcast lost approximately 167,000 residential broadband customers during the quarter. Even though those broadband losses narrowed compared to the prior year, the overall trend remains identical fewer households are choosing to stay tethered to the classic cable package that once dominated American living rooms.
The Bigger Picture: A Shift in How We Watch
These numbers are just the latest chapter in a multi-year pattern we all know as “cord-cutting.” Millions of households have confidently canceled their traditional cable subscriptions in favor of internet-based streaming services. Why? Because streaming offers:
-
Greater flexibility to watch what you want, on your own schedule.
-
Lower costs compared to bloated, expensive cable packages.
-
More control over exactly what appears on your family’s screen.
Interestingly, Comcast’s own streaming service, Peacock, actually grew during the quarter adding 2 million paid subscribers to reach 48 million, and posting its first-ever quarterly profit. That contrast is incredibly telling. The exact same company is watching its legacy cable business decline while its streaming platform gains ground.
Revenue at Comcast’s domestic broadband business fell 5.5 percent, while its wireless business continued to expand. And although media revenue received a temporary boost from the FIFA World Cup, the underlying story remains one of a massive transition away from the old cable model.
What This Means for Faith and Family
For many Christian households, the move away from traditional cable is about far more than just price or convenience. Cable packages have long bundled a wide range of programming—some of it valuable, but much of it not.
As families reassess what they bring into their homes, many are looking for content that actually aligns with their values, rather than simply accepting whatever the standard cable lineup dictates.
Streaming has made true choice possible. Instead of paying for dozens of channels they rarely watch (or actively want to avoid), households can now select platforms that intentionally curate uplifting, faith-centered, and family friendly programming.
The decline in traditional cable subscribers is actively creating space for purpose-driven networks to step up and serve audiences who are desperate for something different.
An Opportunity for Faith-Based Media
At Abundant TV, we see this shift not as a threat, but as confirmation of a growing hunger for content that points people toward hope, truth, and encouragement.
While major media companies wrestle with subscriber losses and changing consumer habits, faith-based streaming platforms are perfectly positioned to meet families exactly where they are—on the devices they already use, with programming that reflects the values they hold dear.
The numbers from Comcast’s latest earnings report are more than just a corporate update; they are another data point in a much larger cultural movement. Viewers are voting with their remote controls, and many of them are choosing content that builds up rather than merely entertains.
As the traditional cable model continues to contract, the opportunity for Christian media to serve the next generation of viewers only grows. The living room is changing. The question is no longer whether families will leave cable it’s what they will choose to put in its place.
