Staying Focused More Than Ever: Why Discernment Is the Currency of This Season

There has been a stirring in my spirit for quite some time and recently, the Holy Spirit confirmed it.
We are living in a season where focus is rare, distractions are constant, and discernment has become the currency. Many people are busy, moving quickly, and doing “all the things,” yet very few are actually aligned. Activity has replaced obedience. Noise has replaced clarity. And motion has been mistaken for progress.
This season requires something different from us. It requires discernment, the kind that helps you know not just what you can do, but what you are called to do. Without it, we will spend our time, energy, and attention on things that were never assigned to us in the first place.
For months, I’ve heard a simple but weighty phrase echo in my heart:
“Keep the main thing, the main thing.”
At first, that phrase was highlighted around Christmas keeping Jesus at the center. Not the pressure. Not the pace. Not the people, parties, or presents, but Christ Himself. Somewhere along the way, many of us drifted. We celebrated around Him instead of because of Him.
But the Holy Spirit didn’t stop there. As I sat with that phrase, He began expanding it beyond the holidays and into every area of life like business, leadership, relationships, calling, and stewardship. The question became unavoidable: What has your attention and should it?
Many of you reading this are in the marketplace. You’re building businesses, leading teams, stewarding influence, and doing your best to be a light in spaces that feel increasingly dark. I’m glad you’re here, because this message is for you.
While many are drowning in distractions, you are being invited into focus.
While others are chasing trends, you are being called to discernment.
In business, it’s easy to get caught up in the endless details required to keep things running. Meetings. Metrics. Content. Sales. Strategy. Systems. Growth. None of those things are wrong, but when discernment is missing, even good things can pull us off course. We begin saying yes to everything and protecting nothing.
Over the years, as I’ve helped thousands of professionals craft their Signature Story, for social media, marketing, and stages across the world, I’ve noticed a consistent pattern. People lose sight of why they started. The vision blurs. The work becomes heavy. And clarity gets replaced by constant motion.
Through years of study, experience, and client work, I’ve come to a simple truth: most people don’t dig deep enough and even fewer stay there long enough for the real reason to take root.
When I work with clients, I often ask “why” multiple times. Almost every time, the real answer doesn’t surface until about the seventh why. That’s where truth lives. That’s where conviction replaces convenience. That’s where discernment sharpens.
Once that real reason is uncovered, a responsibility follows. You are now called to protect it. That truth becomes your filter. Your focus. Your decision-maker. This is what it looks like to treat discernment as currency. You stop spending it on distractions. You stop investing it in things that look good but aren’t God.
If you aren’t willing to protect the core of why you do what you do, you have to ask yourself… why are you doing it at all?
Distractions today are louder, faster, and more accessible than ever before. That’s why this season requires heightened discernment. Without it, we’ll be tossed around by every opportunity, every opinion, and every trend that promises growth but delivers exhaustion.
Discernment keeps us rooted.
Discernment keeps us aligned.
Discernment keeps us anchored in Heavenly wisdom instead of emotional reaction.
This is not a season for diluted focus. It is a season for mission-minded living. Time matters. Purpose matters. Obedience matters. We are not here by accident, and these are not ordinary days.
That truth isn’t meant to produce fear, it’s meant to produce clarity.
So let this be your invitation: simplify. Refocus. Re-center.
Guard your attention. Protect your assignment.
Be intentional with what you allow into your mind, your calendar, and your spirit.
Because in this season, discernment is the currency and focus is the return on investment.
