Richie Scruggs: The American G.I. Who Wrestles for Christ

In a recent episode of “Thrive with Rob and Jason,” we had the privilege of interviewing Richie Scruggs, known in the wrestling world as “American G.I.” Richie’s story is one of faith, family, and fervor for spreading the Gospel through an unconventional yet impactful platform: professional wrestling.
A Journey of Faith and Wrestling

Richie Scruggs’ journey began in 1988 when he found his faith. Just two years later, he entered the professional wrestling arena, not just as a wrestler but as a devoted Christian. Richie often says, “I’m a Christian who just happens to wrestle,” emphasizing that his identity in Christ precedes his wrestling persona.

His ring name, “American G.I.,” is a tribute to his father, a U.S. Army Sergeant Major who served for 30 years. Both his parents are honored with a resting place in Arlington National Cemetery, a testament to their dedication and service to the nation. Richie carries this legacy of service into his wrestling career, where he serves not just the sport but the spiritual needs of his audience.
Family: A Pillar of Strength

Richie’s family is a cornerstone of his life. He has been married for 36 years and has four children. His eldest son, Parker, recently graduated with a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, a significant achievement that fills Richie with pride. Kendall, his youngest biological child, runs the family’s transportation business, showcasing the entrepreneurial spirit that runs in the family. Richie and his wife also adopted two children, Zoey and Jaylen, who are in the 8th and 7th grades, respectively.

His wife, a retired banker with 31 years of experience at 5/3rd Bank, now flips houses, turning her expertise to new ventures. Richie’s background also includes 22 years as a health and P.E. teacher at a local middle school, further reflecting his dedication to education and community service. Now, he works as a personal trainer, helping others achieve their health and fitness goals.

These trips have been profoundly impactful, with Richie and his team traveling 1-2 times a year to wrestle and share the Gospel.

The ministry’s impact is nothing short of remarkable. In a recent event, WFC drew an audience of 15,000 people, with 2,500 attendees accepting Christ into their lives.
