TULSA, Okla., – The Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship (TFFPS) has conferred its 2024 awards for excellence in Pentecostal scholarship. The awards were announced at the 2024 Conference of the Society for Pentecostal Studies hosted by Candler School of Theology. Two book awards and three article awards were conferred.
This year’s Book Awards of Excellence went to Frank D. Macchia for his Tongues of Fire: A Systematic Theology of the Christian Faith (Eugene, OR: Cascade Books-Wipf and Stock Publishers, 2023) and Amos Yong and Dale M. Coulter’s The Holy Spirit and Higher Education: Renewing the Christan University (Waco, TX: Baylor University Press, 2023). Macchia is Professor of Systematic Theology at Vanguard University and Associate Director of the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies at Bangor University, Wales; Yong is Professor of Theology & Mission and Dean of the School of Mission & Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary; Coulter is Professor of Historical Theology at Pentecostal Theological Seminary. Other books considered for this year’s award were as follows: John’s Re-Enchanting the Text; Collins’s Charismatic Christianity; Oliverio’s Pentecostal Hermeneutics in the Late Modern World; Tyra’s Introduction to Spirituality; Macchia’s Introduction to Theology; Félix-Jäger and Shin’s Renewing Christian Worldview; Reynolds’s The Rise and Fall of the Techno-Messiah; Griffiths’s The Spirit as Gift in Acts; Peterson’s Genesis; Kay and Butler’s Pentecostal and Charismatic Education; Vondey’s The Scandal of Pentecost; Cartledge’s The Holy Spirit in Public Life.
Three Awards of Excellence for short works were conferred this year to the following scholars:

Gordon Melton, “The Beginnings of African American Pentecostalism: The Case of Texas” (Pneuma 45.1 [2023]: 5–20), Robert Menzies’s “Pentecostal Eschatology: Why Amillennialism Is a Better Fit” (Journal of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity 43.2 [2023]: 118–32), and William B. Bowes, “Who Has the Spirit? Negotiating Authority in Jude and 1 John” (Journal of Pentecostal Theology 32 [2023]: 176–94).
